Happy Xmas

The phrase ‘Happy Xmas’ is derived from the Greek. When the Emperor Constantine had his great vision which led him to convert to Christianity he saw the Greek letters 'X' and 'P' entwined. These are the first two letters of the Greek word for Christ, and 'XP' can be used to represent Christ. This is where the phrase ‘Xmas’ comes from, and the 'X' alone is used to mean Christ.

Thucydides-Pericles ‘Funeral Speech’
Let me say that our system of government does not copy institutions of our neighbours. It is more the case of ours being a model to others, than of our imitating anyone else. Our constitution is called a democracy because power is in the hands not of the minority but of the whole people. When it is a question of settling private disputes, everyone is equal before the law; when it is a question of putting one person before another in positions of public responsibilities, what counts is not membership of a particular class, but the actual ability which a man possess. No one, so long as he has it in him to be of service to the state is kept in political obscurity because of poverty.
